Press about "Southern Nihilizm" compiled by Mr. Nathan T Birk

“A backwoods swamp of blistering misanthropy, turgid decrepitude and putrid antagonism…crushes like a massive war-engine desecrating the landscape, fountains of charred meat cascading in a dense red mist as Bahimiron storm through a tirade of titan slaughter” – Zero Tolerance

“A distinctly Texas style of dangerously hot black metal that offer one images of decomposing bodies baking in 105-degree temperatures, no doubt the victims of ritual sacrifice. Leaning toward the chaotic, marginally unconventional side of the black metal line, Bahimiron noticeably take their cues from the BEHERIT school of unsettling song structures that stink to high, um, heaven of putridity and iniquity” – Blabbermouth.net

“A noisy, whiskey-soaked take on black metal…BEHERIT, ABSU, and GORGOROTH in a dusty southern bar brawl” – Pitchforkmedia.com

“Rowdy, whiskey-dribbled and piss-soaked, Southern Nihilizm is a cacophonous black metal trainwreck with hallow, disorderly screeching by Grimlord and an echoing din of chaos similar to their overseas contemporaries in Scandinavia…In the end, when your objective as a band is to bring forth the violence and nihilism that makes the United States a country of tortured ambivalence, then consider Southern Nihilizm a sound of the bloody times” – AMP

“A vicious little firebrand…ghoulish sounding…blends a deliciously blasphemous-sounding collection of riffs into a malevolent mixture of speed and impending death” – MetalReview.com

“For those of you that like your black metal as raw and diseased as the bloody meat that WATAIN tends to chuck at their crowds, allow me to introduce you to Bahimiron, Christraping progenitors of the next great Texas chainsaw (gutsfucking) massacre…Fans of BEHERIT, HORNA, BEHEXEN, and DARKTHRONE take note - if you haven’t already been worshipping at Bahimiron's blackened altar, it’s well past time for you to start” – MetalInjection.net

“Words like tormented, nightmarish, insanity and beyond all hope of ever seeing the light of redemption just don't even come close to the pain and agony that the vocals portray …you will be simply blown away that a band can still be this brutal, pissed off and keep amazing structure all together” – Absolute Zero Media webzine

“But their old-school black metal is ‘charming’ enough, especially during the more BEHERIT-esque moments. Who doesn’t love that brutal, echoing blasphemy? It just makes me feel like I'm part of it, the start of black metal, you know. Nobody knew exactly what was going on, but it felt good and exciting” – MetalStorm.ee

“This album offers a little of everything, even if black metal isn't your thing…a solid work that will find its way into the collections of black metal fans, as well as those who seek a little more in their music” – Livingformetal.com

“A highly charged mix of razor-sharp Scandinavian black metal and the more occult thrash-influenced war metal popularized by the likes of ABOMINATOR, ABSU, BESTIAL WARLUST, BLASPHEMY, CONQUEROR and DESTRÖYER 666. The atmosphere is oppressingly grim and frighteningly suffocating all while adhering to the known traditional genre standards. Much like the revolutionary Scandinavian black metal bands of the mid-to-late ‘90s, Bahimiron need not to play at constant top speed to create an atmosphere of all-consuming darkness” – Masterful-Magazine.com [8/10 rating]

“Truly monstrous…a wicked combination of early IMMORTAL and DARK FUNERAL, sure to scare your neighbors and wake the dead” – Seaoftranquility.org

“Hits all of the requisite signatures of the genre with considerable gusto and enthusiasm…blows through an approach somewhat reminiscent of BATHORY’s first couple of full lengths with a bit of a more mature approach and touches of droning atmosphere…highly recommended” – Live4Metal.com

“The guitars of Krag Dragon are sharp enough to gut you out from afar…it kicks ass. And it manages to capture that chaotic and evil spirit that veritable goat-worshipping should” – DeafSparrow.com

Most recent Black Metal has become a joke to me. A few sparks here and there, but for the most part it seems a dead genre, the best it had to offer peaking ten years ago, a handful of bands I still have great respect for. Nowadays it's been reduced to the mall crowd trying to hard and cutting their teeth on Cradle Of Filth. In the US it was even worse...a few unsavory types trying hard to emulate their Nordic contemporaries and failing miserably.

Like any rule there are always exceptions and for me Bahimiron has always been one. There was always something a bit off and slightly dangerous about them. They didn't care if you liked them and it wasn't metal posturing. Whiskey's their god and human flesh their altar. There's no galavanting in snowy forests with replica swords here, it's sweltering Houston heat and AK-47's.

Bahimiron has been doing this for a long time. The first demo was shat out in 2001. A few more followed, splits with USBM band Teratism and a 7” with Finnish killers Sargeist. Then came the first full-length in 2006, Pure Negativism: In Allegiance With Self Wreckage. That was a great accomplishment, but I still felt like there was more damage to be made, more havoc to be unleashed...welp, here it is courtesy of the Terror Division themselves and Moribund Records.

From the opening church organ chords of “The Cauldron Born”, you know, as we say in Texas, the shit's on. It's full-throttle Black Metal abandon the way the devil meant it. Rapid fire drums, wet hornet guitar attacks, piñata bat to the face slabs of bass fury and this is the best vocal performance ever from the band. One of the most impressive things that struck me about this release was the overall sound, it's incredible and HUGE. Each instrument can be heard distinctively and let's face it, BM has a tendency to become a blur of noises that sometimes works, but most of the time not.

The tracks range in speed from blistering to mid-paced, but never losing their intensity or power. One of my favorite tracks is actually one of the slower numbers, “Pills and 90 Proof”. Imagine a Black Metal song if Waylon Jennings was in the band. And the title track, fuck, one of the best metal songs of 2008. The guitar bridge in this one is amazing.

Here's the deal, yep, I consider these boys and girls comrades, but that don't mean I'll blow them. But this is the album I always knew they had in them, I think it just took some good label backing to make it happen. This is the real deal here, the disc that will definitely put Bahimiron on the map and feather in the cap for USBM. Brilliant black on black cover art. The closing track pretty much sums it up, War, Whiskey, Sodomy.

Welcome once again to Revelations of Doom, Grim Kim's guide to all things ugly, obscure, and awesome in the good ol' extreme metal underground. This time around, the spotlight comes to rest upon a genre quite near and dear to my heart - nasty, blasphemous, and raw-as-fuck black metal. Welcome to hell.

If the existence of our current Commander in Chief isn't enough proof that the Lonestar State is a veritable breeding ground for pure evil, take an ear to some of its more sinister musical exports and you'll find proof enough. After all, the likes of AVERSE SEFIRA , BROWN JENKINS , RIGOR MORTIS , and the mighty ABSU all hail from this conservative stronghold. For those of you that like your black metal as raw and diseased as the bloody meat that WATAIN tends to chuck at their crowds, allow me to introduce you to BAHIMIRON , Christraping progenitors of the next great Texas chainsaw (gutsfucking) massacre.

BAHIMIRON have been spreading their own particular brand of aural terrorism throughout the underground for years, releasing a string of cult demos and coming together with like-minded hellraisers SARGEIST on a 2006 split release. Their sound is brutal, ugly, and mean; positively nasty basslines (lain down by Jenoside, who also injects a rare shot of estrogen into this very male-dominated genre), appropriately rough-edged riffs straight outta circa-1994-Norway, a vocalist who sounds like he's gargling a cathedral's worth of broken stained glass, and a drummer who perpetually sounds as if he's seconds away from losing all control and descending into outright chaos all lend a hand in making up the sonic maelstrom that is BAHIMIRON . This shit is fucking bestial .

The fine folks at Moribund just released Southern Nihilizm , Bahimiron's first album of all-original material, this past August. Fans of BEHERIT , HORNA , BEHEXEN , and DARKTHRONE take note - if you haven't already been worshipping at BAHIMIRON 's blackened altar, it's well past time for you to start.

http://deafsparrow.com/Bahimiron-review.htm

F ew albums come graced with a title as descriptive as this one.  Yes, this nasty ass quartet does indeed hail from the south, namely Houston, TX. And they do in fact deliver some sonic nihilism. For the ignoramus, Merrian Webster defines ‘nihilism' as ‘a viewpoint that traditional values and beliefs are unfounded and that existence is senseless and useless' .  In other words, Bahimiron is with these nine tracks hell bent on saying ‘fuck you' to whatever it is that you believe as long as you go to church. And if you wear a tie, dude, existence is fucking futile, didn't you hear that? Life sucks. There is no point to it. We shall all just quit our jobs, tell our families to take a hike, listen to Bahimiron and slit our wrists to that song “War, Whiskey, Sodomy”. Of course, this last deed must be executed while we practice/drink/practice what the song instructs. It's a damn fine philosophy to go by, if you ask me. I shit you not.

To the blasphemous music; the guitars of Krag Dragon are sharp enough to gut you out from afar. They are South Beach diet thin and come nicely complimented by the fucked paced drumming of Blaash. Completing the lineup is French expat JenOcide (get it?), whose string presence shines for her absence. Hey, this is fucking black metal, a genre where low bottom fatness is nearly an insult and like, totally ‘untroo'.  It is not until the title track that we hear her finger's work and you know what, it gives the music unheard depth. I think more black metallers should go for this. Leading Bahimiron is Grimlord, a dude that wanted to wear corpse paint but surely, didn't really bother with a design.

Southern Nihilizm is Bahimiron's second full-length. Like is the costume with many cult black metal bands, that does not mean they are new to this dark trade. With a few splits, a 7” and a couple of demos on their discography Bahimiron's latest comes as a slab at dirty sonics and chaotic playing. Sloppy and choppy to the max the songs evoke the genre's early days of a musician's beginner's proficiency. Particularly appealing is “A Shark in the Guts”, where the band for moments sounds as if they are playing while watching the news or some shit. But it kicks ass. And it manages to capture that chaotic and evil spirit that veritable goat worshipping should.

Review by Lucas Ruijs

When you look at the cover of Bahimiron's second full-length it will be obvious which banners they hold high in the sky. A goat, flames, two pentagrams, an upside down cross, an illegible logo – and all of that printed black on grey. If you also think about the album title, "Southern Nihilizm", and take into consideration that it is derived from their base of operation (Texas, USA) and the nihilism they preach, you can practically already hear the razor sharp riffs, high-pitched shrieks and the hellish pounding of the war drums.

My personal opinion of this type of band is then formed by the feeling they conjure. Originality plays no vital role, but credibility does. You do not have to play tight or hyper fast to convince me of being worthy of the air you breathe, but you must be able to give me a shot of adrenaline shot with your music. I want to feel the black blood rushing through my rusty veins.

And Bahimiron delivers. Alright, this band will probably never reach any fame outside of the underground, nor aspire that. But their old school Black metal is "charming" enough, especially during the more Beherit-esque moments. Who doesn't love that brutal echoing blasphemy? It just makes me feel like I'm part of it, the start of Black metal, you know. Nobody knew exactly what was going on, but it felt good and exciting. If you are a fan of raw Black metal, this album will set your black heart aflame. Otherwise, I'd strongly advise you to run and hide!

What a glorious mess! Houston's Bahimiron takes Bathory's "drenched in reverb" aesthetic to new heights. I can imagine the befuddled recording engineer for Southern Nihilizm (Moribund, 2008): "I can't turn up the vocal reverb any higher!" "Yes, it's set at 'Cathedral 2'." "Are you sure the drums 'don't matter'?" I'm sort of joking about that last one. The drumming, by a certain "Blaash," isn't flashy or technical, but he constantly and organically throws in variation underneath standard black metal riffs. At their best, the guitars bore through the earth with grim-faced disgust. Dig that amazing abortion of a solo in "Amongst the Filth"! It makes Kerry King sound like Allan Holdsworth. On top are crazed vocals that run the gamut - screams, shrieks, grunts, growls, howls, you name it. Combined with over-the-top reverb, they form a thick, slime-like texture. Screamin' Jay Hawkins - perhaps the original black metaller, with his skull and coffin props - comes to mind. Put a spell on you, indeed.

I was taken aback by the track title "Halo of Fliez" (spelled correctly), because I thought perhaps Three Six Mafia had made a new track. How wrong I was. How horribly, horribly wrong I was.

Houston's Bahimiron might not be able to spell for dick, but even I can't deny the ungods when a vicious little firebrand like Southern Nihilizm hits my stereo. I mean, I know the Moribund Cult folks have a thing for the black metal scene (and by "have a thing for," I mean "own"), but this year they've really outdone themselves. Countless skull goblets should be raised to their unwaveringly great black metal art.

Anyways, Bahimiron have a pretty solid sound: tons of echo on the vocals, nonexistent bass, high treble guitars, and punchy drums. I mention the echoed vocals because, well...where was this recorded, anyways? It sounds like they did the vocal session through a drain pipe. Maybe they recorded the vocals in one of those vacuum tube rooms I see every once in a while on the Discovery channel. At any rate, it's ghoulish sounding, which is probably what Bahimiron was aiming for, and it fits the music pretty well.

Some of the riffs get old really quick, like, say, the first half of the title track, but then some are just downright awesome, like, say, the second half of the title track. Other tracks have that quality of, "you know, I might've heard that somewhere before, but I can't imagine where," but the thing is, those tracks are the best ones. That's right, folks. What could be percieved as the least inventive songs on Southern Nihilizm are probably the best of the bunch. But it's all in the way it's arranged that makes it interesting. The aformentioned "Halo of Fliez" is my current favorite because it blends a deliciously blasphemous sounding collection of riffs into a malevolent mixture of speed and impending death.

Bahimiron isn't out to reinvent the wheel, bless their little Southern black hearts.

BAHIMIRON
Southern Nihilizm
(Moribund Records)
41:35min

Texas is a place of stark contrasts. On the surface is the oil pumping conservative cowboy veneer the world is used to, but on the flip side lurks a dark, pulsating network of blasphemous veins. The lone star state has given us much over the years, NECROVORE and S.A. SLAYER come to mind. BAHIMIRON are the next in line, having produced only one other full length album several years ago. Their latest, "Southern Nihilizm" is like many other American Black Metal recordings, possessing a typically harsh wasp-like sound, and borrowing heavily from its European counter-parts. In many ways the album sounds like a sped up latter day MUTIILATION with a dose of KATHARSIS and FLUISTERWOUD. There is a noticeable change in production towards the halfway point, or rather the beginning of side B. Before any of this puts you off, keep in mind, that the bands BAHIMIRON sound like aren't bad at all, and its rather nice to have something that satisfies all the criteria without adding anything new. The band is most definitely angry and with plenty of hate. There is depth here, albeit a depth you've no doubt explored dozens of times. This is good stuff. www.myspace.com/bahimiron

Bahimiron - "Southern Nihilizm" (USA)
Moribund Records

Probably being one of the most prominent players on the US black metal scene Texas based Bahimiron release their second album "Southern Nihilizm" through American specialist label Moribund Records. The band plays a highly charged mix of razorsharp Scandinavian black metal and the more occult thrash-influenced war metal popularized by the likes of Abominator, Absu, Bestial Warlust, Blasphemy, Conqueror and Deströyer 666. The atmosphere is oppressingly grim and frightingly suffocating all while adhering to the known traditional genre standards. Much like the revolutionairy Scandinavian black metal bands of the mid-to-late '90s Bahimiron need not to play at constant top speed to create an atmosphere of all consuming darkness. Bahimiron might not be doing anything remotely new in the genre, but what they do - they do with much gusto and conviction. The delivery is fiery, the execution is fittingly barbaric and all in Bahimiron know their way around their respective instruments. The individual songwriting also is instantly recognizable, a feature not often seen in underground black metal these days. The production is similar to Dark Funeral's debut "The Secrets Of the Black Arts" although the guitar tone and drum sound is notably better. "Southern Nihilizm" is bestial black metal and chaotic war metal merged with that typical southern flair, exalting sounds of alienation, depression and disgust while simultaneously rejoicing in all that is violent and morbid about American culture.

Bahimiron - Southern Nihilizm-CD (Moribund Cult)

This Texas troop of hateful and scorned Black metallers made quite a raw and noisy debut for the folks at Moribund Records. It's reminds me of the the darker side of the Blackened path that you would hear from Poland, Germany or Brazil now. The razor sharp guitar and the low powerful bass rumbles. The drumming is one step from total chaos but always masterfully controlled right be for that point. Using a words like tormented, nightmarish, insanity and beyond all hope of ever seeing the light of redemption just don't even come close to the pain and agony that the vocals portray . Beherit, Krieg, Judas Iscariot, Genocide Kommand etc you will be simply blown away that a band can still be this brutal, pissed off and keep amazing structure all together. The're are moments were a doomy atmospheric feeling comes across even some odd chanting like vocals effect. Bahimiron is Black metal the kind that only those that live and breathe it can truly create....

Reviews about "Pure Negativism - In Allegiance With Self Wreckage":(These were taken from Auramystique.com - Hails to Charles)

Bloodcult’ zine (Gre) I must confess that these American where out of my knowledge. It was a pleasant surprise though. Angry Black Metal with high-pitched vocals and war-like compositions that get launched in supersonic speed. They have nice riffs that bring MARDUK in mind, but every now and then they reminded me a bit of the old NECROMASS, in the whole atmosphere and feeling of paranoia and multiple vocals that scream in some parts. They slow down when they must and “let you rest” with the vocals being the main sound in different variations and war cries. I really liked the self titled song “Pure Negativism”, with its razor-like riffs. They mostly play fast and their advantage is their vocals that are demonized! So here we have another Black Metal release that is worth the money. They have also done a split 7” with SARGEIST. ---------------------------------------

Buy it! Autocratôr - 10/10

--------------------------------------- Panzerfaust magazine (Poland) – 66.6 / 100 I haven's had good feelings about this CD - especially after a contact with BAHIMIRON's labelmates, BEKHIRA - who suck, by the way. But luckily this US horde (BAHIMIRON) has mutilated by corpse quite nicely, with quality black metal worship. Yeah, BAHIMIRON is a fine example for solid US black metal horde. They deliver an uncompromising dose of negative energy in form of traditional black metal. It may be taking some influences from the old Scandinavian scene (GORGOROTH, anyone???), but at the same time it also reaches for the infernal bloodshed of bands like BLACK WITCHERY, ABAZAGORATH, THORNSPAWN. This music is damn fast and unrelentless, with rather simple, but not primitive structure, based on strong, straight forward, not very original, but easily memorable compositions. The most effective manslaughter one could get while playing fast as hell, screaming the guts out in the Satan's name, and so BAHIMIRON does. Of course if you'll strip this music down, you'll notice some occasional mid-paced fragments as well, riffs and ideas, which nicely vary this piece and safe it from not being monotonous and one dimensional. And as usual, it works fine, such tracks as "Terror Divizion Bloodstrike" are a great nail in the Jesus Smellus' cross, bit similar to GORGOROTH and old MAYHEM ("Wolves to the Flesh of Heaven") . So "Pure Negativism" is a good offer for every black maniac, who hasn't started to listen to that kind of music when CRADLE OF FART has released their recent CD. ---------------------------------------

http://www.lordsofmetal.nl While reading the myspace of Bahimiron it became clear to me that we are dealing with quite a kvlty band. Bahimiron are a malignant vile whiskey drenched hate squad, composed of 10-15 year veterans of the black metal scenes in Texas and in France. The black metal of Bahimiron is led by someone called Grimlord, who chose the rest of the band by hand to lead the attack on unsoiled black metal and bands with a virtuous nature so they say. So you would think that this band is quite something right? No way, its just a hillbilly black metal band from Texas who stole some bass player from France. The black metal performed by these people is clearly influenced by Gorgoroth’s older work, but it is just not good enough. They are not even close to the overwhelming atmosphere that Gorgoroth brought us with ‘Destroyer’. Even worse, this band tries too hard at being evil, which makes it kind of hard for me to take them serious. The music has its moments but when I read stuff like ‘it sounds like a wall of fuggin noize, like the kind you hear before getting gang raped in prison’ at the same time it just ruins it for me. If you are a fan of the old Gorgoroth you can try this out but I warn you, it is a lousy replacement. Rating: 40/100 ---------------------------------------

http://burningblack.net (Chile) This band seems to be a very prolific one, this work is their first full length album, but it’s the third work they release this year. Musically the band delivers here a brutal slab of pure Black Metal somewhat inclined toward the early 90’s tradition, or at least a little more traditional sounding than showed at their split album with Teratism. Bahimiron seems to have left here a little (just a little) of its ultra-chaotic approach and focused its atmospheres in a more “old school” sound. The ultra blurry guitars are now, quite more “depurated”, but still brutal as hell, the mid tuned guitars are still the main responsible here for the blurry and chaotic aura; the lead guitar contributes with some sharpened, electric and strident lines. The bass work of Mrs. JenOside is much more present than before, adding negative low vibes to the whole apocalyptic panorama. The blasting passages still reigns supreme over this album, but the drumming sounds pretty versatile, with a notorious bass drum sound, which gives a muscular, profound sound that perfectly fits with the bass work. The infernal voices of Grimlord are an undisputable highlight, his possessed shrieks are just fucking great, mixing some ripping mid to low tuned grunts with high hellish shrieks delivers an incredibly blasphemous feeling. This album consist in 9 tracks clocked at 34 minutes of pure sonic blasphemy, but the promo version I received also contains a bonus track, “The Raping Of Flesh” which is actually only available on the Split 7” EP with Sargeist, this track is a little rawer than the previous ones, I also recommend you to check this song out. This album reminded me the early works of Mayhem and Gorgoroth, with their particular way to conjugate bestiality and speed, always accompanied by a hellish and obscure feeling. The whole productions here, is quite depurated and strong sounding, but raw enough to maintain the dirty and infernal sound their chaotic music requires. “Pure Negativism: In Allegiance with Self Wreckage” is, as the title may suggest, a bestial piece of hate fuelled Black Metal in the finest vein… Strongly recommended. (AP) ---------------------------------------

http://www.vampire-magazine.com The year 2006 was quite a busy year for Bahimiron. Not only did they release a split with Teratism and a 7” split with Sargeist, they also released their first full length “Pure Negativism: In Allegiance With Self Wreckage” through Aura Mystique Productions. The opinions are quite diverse on this album. Either the human being is quite fond of the early 1990s black metal worship or it is has been bashed because of that worship. Still, the album does have the essential ingredients (think of the riffs, speed and atmosphere) to get an “Early Gorgoroth” label slapped on the cover.
